Bay of Naples

Minimum age 5yrs

This fabulous Italian holiday takes your family through the best of Italy. This 8-day adventure takes you from the ruins of Rome to the stunning Amalfi Coast. Just imagine what life was like for ancient Romans in Pompeii, wander cobblestone streets in Minori and enjoy true southern Italian hospitality during a cooking demonstration and dinner at a family-run farm in Sorrento. Get stuck into the home of pizza and pasta, and relax in Sorrento and in the fishing village of Minori.

Ancient Ruins of Herculaneum & Pompeii – History comes alive as you visit the atmospheric Roman ruins of Herculaneum and build up a mental picture of life in those times. The city of Pompeii was buried and wonderfully preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. You will walk Pompeii’s ancient streets, peering into the deserted houses and exploring the massive public baths that were visited daily by the inhabitants.

Vesuvius Volcano – Vesuvius is one of the world’s most famous volcanoes and you will climb to its top, take in amazing views of the bay and gaze deep down into the crater.

Adventure Level – An easy trip suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and active. Other than the steep path up Vesuvius, most of the terrain is relatively gentle, if a bit uneven underfoot. Modes of transport include train, boat, taxi, minibus, local bus, on foot.

Bay of Naples

Day 1 Rome – Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Crowded with ancient ruins and religious monuments, Rome still pulses to the beat of modern life and is packed with designer shops, restaurants and cafes. There are no activities planned before tonight’s group meeting at 6 pm. Your leader will be collecting insurance and next of kin details for your family during this meeting, so make sure you book a flight that will get you to Rome in time to attend. Beyond the formalities, it’s a great opportunity to introduce yourselves to your leader and the other families joining your tour. Why not head out for a group meal and toast with a slice of pizza (or a forkful of pasta) to the Italian adventure to come. Your leader is full of recommendations on local restaurants, so pick their brain. Accommodation: Prince Galles Hotel or similar (1 night)

Day 2 Pompeii – One of the world’s most famous ancient cities awaits today after a three-hour train journey. Pompeii was immortalised on 26 August AD79 when nearby volcano Mt Vesuvius erupted, spewing molten rock, pumice and ash over the city. This thriving Roman trading centre was thus frozen in time, an ancient tragedy that allows modern visitors to take a unique look at the lives of ancient Romans. Spend a few hours on a guided walk around Pompeii and discover how people lived, worked and interacted 2000 years ago. The similarities are often more surprising than the differences. The finely preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and once-bustling marketplace, all waiting to be discovered by your family. Your hotel this evening is located very close to the archaeological site, so you won’t have far to go once you decide to call it a day. Accommodation: Hotel Del Sole or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 3 Minori – This morning we go to the port and head across the glorious Bay of Naples to Capri. A hydrofoil will take you across to the island (approx: 30 minutes) that was once home to the magnificent holiday palaces of the Roman emperors. Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline is pierced by natural grottoes, while in the interior, narrow roads wind through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of little white houses with flower-filled gardens, and manicured towns that offer swanky hotels and chic cafes. Though its unmatched setting and natural beauty means it’s popular with visitors, there are still many hidden corners and treasures to explore. After the exploration of the Marina and the little town of Capri, take a bus up to Anacapri and enjoy the best views of the island and bay from the top of Monte Solaro, reachable by cable car. Around mid-afternoon, take the 1 hour-long ferry back to Sorrento. You’ll have a free evening tonight. Accommodation: Minori Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 Minori – Take a free day to explore Minori at your own (or your kids) pace. There are many beaches to choose from, though be aware the nicer they are the more crowded they will be (particularly during Summer from June to August). Hire a few deck chairs if you want to relax, or alternatively you can rent a paddle boat or sea kayak and explore the sea. The walk from Minori to Ravello is also beautiful and a great way to see the region. While it’s only about an hour each way, it is steep in parts and step-heavy, so it’s moderately difficult. The views along the way more than make up for any huffing and puffing, but remember to pack plenty of water and sunscreen before leaving. Accommodation: Minori Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 5 Sorrento – Leave Minori in the rear-view mirror on a stunning drive past mountains to an agriturismo, a working farm that also provides meals and accommodation. While you won’t be staying here tonight, spend 1.5 hours in gorgeous surrounds, sampling produce grown on site and learning about the business. Continue to Sorrento, another famous (and historic) resort town, and enjoy a special surprise! Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 6: Sorrento – Head to the port and board a lifted hydrofoil boat to Capri, cruising across the glorious Bay of Naples. Arrive 30 minutes later in the holiday destination favoured by the Roman emperors. Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline is pierced by natural grottoes, while narrow roads wind inland through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of little white houses with flower-filled gardens. Though its unmatched setting and natural beauty means it’s popular with visitors, there are still many hidden corners and treasures to explore. After the exploration of the Marina Grande and the little town of Capri, take a bus up to Anacapri and enjoy the best views of the island and bay from the top of Monte Solaro, reachable by cable car. Around mid-afternoon, take the one-hour ferry back to Sorrento, where you’ll have a free evening. Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 7: Sorrento – There are many options for your free morning in this seaside town. Make sure to grab a gelato (or three) while you’re here, Sorrento has some of the finest scoops in Italy. This evening you’ll get a hands-on lesson in crafting everyone’s favourite Italian dish – pizza! Enjoy a cooking demonstration and delectable dinner in an amazing location, an agriturismo with incredible views of Mt Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Eat, laugh and enjoy a glass of wine while the kids explore the farm alongside adorable wild rabbits. Enjoy southern Italian hospitality at its finest on your final night on this family adventure. Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8: Sorrento – Wave goodbye to Italy and your new friends. Meals Included: Breakfast

Useful Information: As there are potholes and cobblestones in many European cities, it’s recommended that you leave any wheelie bags/cases at home and bring a backpack instead. As this is an eight-day trip, a large backpack should be enough to carry all of your belongings. Make sure you pack some sturdy and comfortable shoes as there can be a lot of walking around the towns, ruins, and walking trails of this area.

Weather: Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. Use sun protection, wear layers, and carry plenty of water because hydration is key, especially when you’re walking a lot. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

A great trip for families

A great trip for families, both my children enjoyed this trip immensely, much to their surprise. The most active part is the trip up to Vesuvius which is worth it.

(August 2017)

Lovely holiday in Italy

We had a lovely holiday in Italy, thank you. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel in Sorrento, it was clean and well run with a great sun terrace where we had a picnic one evening.

Ilaria, our tour guide, was organised and wonderful with the kids. A highlight was when she organised our own sailboat for the trip to Capri.

The food was excellent all week, although we felt that the restaurant where we had lunch in Pompeii was overpriced.

We had a great time and we all made new friends from our lovely group. My daughter enjoyed the holiday – particularly the pizza – and I feel that we made some wonderful new memories together in what is a beautiful part of the world.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

The right balance of freedom

Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday. It didn’t bother me at all that it wasn’t just single parents on the trip – everyone was great and I have made some lasting friendships.

The trip was very well organised throughout and we felt safe and looked after at all times. We had the right balance of freedom to do our own thing versus group activities.

Marcus is not the most easily-pleased teenager, and he has enjoyed every minute.

Absolutely loved it, it was just what we needed!

Best wishes,

Vicki and Marcus (2015)
