Bay of Naples

Minimum age 5yrs

This fabulous Italian holiday takes your family through the best of Italy. Visit the atmospheric Roman ruins of Herculaneum and see the ruined city of Pompeii preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. Get stuck into the home of pizza and pasta, and relax in Sorrento and in the fishing village of Minori. Enjoy a day trip to beautiful Capri and enjoy kayaking along the Amalfi Coast.

Ancient Ruins of Herculaneum & Pompeii – History comes alive as you visit the atmospheric Roman ruins of Herculaneum and build up a mental picture of life in those times. The city of Pompeii was buried and wonderfully preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. You will walk Pompeii’s ancient streets, peering into the deserted houses and exploring the massive public baths that were visited daily by the inhabitants.

Capri Island & Vesuvius Volcano – Capri is famous for its unparalleled setting and natural beauty. You will visit the fairytale Blue Grotto in a small boat and be amazed by the iridescent ‘blue light’. Vesuvius is one of the world’s most famous volcanoes and you will climb to its top, take in amazing views of the bay and gaze deep down into the crater.

Adventure Level – An easy trip suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and active. Other than the steep path up Vesuvius, most of the terrain is relatively gentle, if a bit uneven underfoot. Modes of transport include train, boat, taxi, minibus, local bus, on foot.

Trip Highlights:

  • Pompeii & Herculaneum
  • Climb Mt. Vesuvius
  • Kayak along the coast
  • Capri Island & Blue Grotto

Bay of Naples

Day 1 Sorrento – Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. You can arrive at any time, as there are no activities planned until a group meeting this evening at 6pm. Home to artistic treasures, renowned sights, celebrated fashion and some of the tastiest food on the planet, Italy will surely impress. From Rome’s ancient streets to the romantic canals of Venice, be seduced by a slice of La Dolce Vita. People have been coming to the peninsula and islands of the Sorrento region for at least 2,000 years, and it’s easy to see why. There are many options in this small seaside town with its fine piazzas, maze of old streets, sidewalk cafes and glamorous shops. The area is also famous for its lemon and orange groves – try some limoncello, a popular lemon liqueur, while watching the sun go down over the ocean. Accommodation: Carlton Hotel or similar (1 night)

Day 2 Sorrento – This morning you’ll take a short train ride (50mins) to Ercolano and visit the ancient site of Herculaneum. Often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbour Pompeii, it too was destroyed in a river of mud from the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavations first started in the 18th century, and subsequently uncovered bronze and silver artefacts, marble statues and many mosaics as well as a superbly preserved network of streets and houses. A guided tour (approx 2 hours) will bring the site to life, revealing everyday life as it was almost 2000 years ago. After you’ve walked the streets of this incredible town, return to your hotel by train. This evening you’ll get a hands-on lesson in the thing most important to Italians – food! Enjoy a pizza cooking demonstration and delectable dinner. Accommodation: Carlton Hotel or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Sorrento – This morning we go to the port and head across the glorious Bay of Naples to Capri. A hydrofoil will take you across to the island (approx: 30 minutes) that was once home to the magnificent holiday palaces of the Roman emperors. Capri’s dramatic rocky coastline is pierced by natural grottoes, while in the interior, narrow roads wind through fragrant citrus groves, past villages of little white houses with flower-filled gardens, and manicured towns that offer swanky hotels and chic cafes. Though its unmatched setting and natural beauty means it’s popular with visitors, there are still many hidden corners and treasures to explore. After the exploration of the Marina and the little town of Capri, take a bus up to Anacapri and enjoy the best views of the island and bay from the top of Monte Solaro, reachable by cable car. Around mid-afternoon, take the 1 hour-long ferry back to Sorrento. You’ll have a free evening tonight. Accommodation: Carlton Hotel or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 Sorrento – We will be picked up by our private transfer and head to Pompeii (approximately 40 minutes). Until the 26th August, 79 AD, Pompeii was a thriving Roman trading centre, where ordinary people went about their everyday business, but it was frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing 2,000 people and covering their homes in a layer of ash. Now you can take a unique look back into the lives of ancient Romans and discover how they lived, worked and interacted 2,000 years ago. The finely preserved ruins include villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets. Walk along the chariot-marked streets, visit the magnificent amphitheatre, and drop by the ‘Villa of Mysteries’. Then, take a short ride up the mighty Mt Vesuvius, maybe the most famous volcano in the world! Climb for around 45 minutes to the summit for staggering views over the Bay of Naples, then walk another 30 minutes on a trail across the cinders for views down into the crater. Although Mt Vesuvius is still considered to be an active volcano, the last eruption was in 1944 and there’s no sign of volcanic activity. See first-hand the awesome power of the volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is then about 30 minutes walk back down again. We will re-board our van and head to Sorrento where there is a surprise visit in store. Note: the road to Mt Vesuvius is very windy; please take this into consideration if you or your child suffers from motion/car sickness. Accommodation: Carlton Hotel or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 5 Minori – Today pack your bags and transfer to your next destination with private transfer. A stunning drive with views of the mountains takes us to our stop at a local Agriturismo to taste their local products and learn about the business of food. We will spend some time here (1hr and half) before heading onto Minori. Once in Minori, you will have free time to explore this small little village or enjoy some beach time. The beach here is like many European beaches; quite crowded with lots of people, umbrellas and loungers, which are available rent. It’s a great place to people watch. Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 6: Minori – Today we head out on kayaks (or paddleboats dependent of the ages and abilities of the children) and do a tour to one of the local waterfalls. We will spend 1 to 1.5 hours on the water depending on the speed of the paddlers (you!) and the weather. This activity is weather permitting. This afternoon you will have a chance to unwind, relax and share tales of this morning’s adventure. Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 7: Minori – Today is free to enjoy Minori. Explore the Roman villa, walk along the coast or just relax and unwind in this delightful village. You could walk to the quaint town of Ravello, which we highly recommended. It is approximately 1300 stairs each way but lovely town to visit. Or you could do the Walk of the Lemons, which runs from Maiori to Minori. It’s a beautiful 1-hour walk with amazing views as you climb up into the lemon groves. Accommodation: Hotel Caporal or similar (1 night) Meals Included:Breakfast

Day 8: Minori – Wave goodbye to Italy and your new friends. Meals Included: Breakfast

Useful Information: As there are potholes and cobblestones in many European cities, it’s recommended that you leave any wheelie bags/cases at home and bring a backpack instead. As this is an eight-day trip, a large backpack should be enough to carry all of your belongings. Make sure you pack some sturdy and comfortable shoes as there can be a lot of walking around the towns, ruins, and walking trails of this area.

Weather: Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. Use sun protection, wear layers, and carry plenty of water because hydration is key, especially when you’re walking a lot. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

A great trip for families

A great trip for families, both my children enjoyed this trip immensely, much to their surprise. The most active part is the trip up to Vesuvius which is worth it.

(August 2017)

Lovely holiday in Italy

We had a lovely holiday in Italy, thank you. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel in Sorrento, it was clean and well run with a great sun terrace where we had a picnic one evening.

Ilaria, our tour guide, was organised and wonderful with the kids. A highlight was when she organised our own sailboat for the trip to Capri.

The food was excellent all week, although we felt that the restaurant where we had lunch in Pompeii was overpriced.

We had a great time and we all made new friends from our lovely group. My daughter enjoyed the holiday – particularly the pizza – and I feel that we made some wonderful new memories together in what is a beautiful part of the world.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

The right balance of freedom

Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday. It didn’t bother me at all that it wasn’t just single parents on the trip – everyone was great and I have made some lasting friendships.

The trip was very well organised throughout and we felt safe and looked after at all times. We had the right balance of freedom to do our own thing versus group activities.

Marcus is not the most easily-pleased teenager, and he has enjoyed every minute.

Absolutely loved it, it was just what we needed!

Best wishes,

Vicki and Marcus (2015)
