Tunisian Voyager
A must for Star Wars Fans!
Tunisia, just over three hours flight away, is a great introduction to North Africa. Start in the old walled medina of Sousse and explore the alleyways and markets before moving on to the imposing and complete coliseum at El Djem – the third largest Amphitheatre in the Roman Empire. Next you enter the fringes of the Sahara and, from the desert capital of Tozeur, visit a string of alluring oases where mountains, gorges, ruined villages and waterfalls combine. After crossing the huge Chott el Djerid salt flat you ride camels into the sand desert to camp under star-filled skies. Next comes the unforgettable experience of sleeping underground in a troglodyte hotel at the village of Matmata, made famous as Luke Skywalker's home in Star Wars. Round off your trip with a beach stay at Sousse.
Anyone in good health can take part in this trip. Walks are easy but the heat can make them feel tougher and there can be loose rocks underfoot; all are optional. The desert camp is basic and the troglodyte village has limited facilities so be prepared to rough it for a night or two – it's worth it!
Minimum age: 5 years
Accommodation
Hotels will be well-located and clean, with private facilities (shower/bath and toilet) and hot water. The hotels on this trip are no exception, and will feature rooms with en suite facilities. In the desert you sleep communally in large, traditional, Bedouin-style tents with one side open to the elements. Mattresses are provided but a sleeping bag is essential. Facilities are limited with a few shared showers and toilets. In Matmata there is the possibility that you might use multiple occupancy communal rooms. Facilities are in a shared ablution block and are limited. NB: towels are not provided.
Rooming at Hotels
* Family of two - All family groupings of two will be put into a twin room.
* Family of three - Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room.
Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply.
This means that, in practice, a triple room will often simply be a twin room
with a mattress on the floor or a further bed squashed in. Where it is impossible
to provide a triple room, you will have to decide which of your party takes the single
room.
* Family of four or more - Wherever possible we will put you in a quadruple room.
For larger families, we will provide twin/or quadruple rooms as standard, with a
triple room if there is an odd number. Whilst we will do our very best to ensure that
families are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining
rooms), we can't guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and
we sometimes have little to no control over where you will be put. You need to
come prepared for this.
