Skiing in the French Pyrenees
A great value destination for the intermediate & advanced skier. Over 100km of pistes for all abilities and a snow park for snowboarders.....
The Alpine ski resort of Barèges (1250m) in the impressive Tourmalet ski area is the largest ski resort in the French Pyrenees. There are around 100 kilometres of well-kept pistes set in beautiful unspoiled scenery, and because it is less well-known than the Alps, skiing is cheaper and less crowded. Barèges is a traditional French mountain ski village with friendly and welcoming residents and a lively but not rowdy atmosphere.
The village is set in a picturesque valley, bounded by meadows, wooded slopes and snow-capped mountains. Skiing in the French Pyrenees is relatively unknown in the UK, remaining a well kept secret by the French. There are no large tour operators here. The Pyrenees are wonderful for skiing with more snow annually than the Alps, because of their proximity to the Atlantic coast. Weather conditions are ideal with high pressure systems bringing clear blue skies, interspersed with heavy snowstorms to revive the slopes. As a result, the Tourmalet resort has a long season from the beginning of December through to the end of March.
The Tourmalet ski area is excellent for beginners, intermediate and more advanced skiers. There are gentle nursery slopes and beautiful, wide runs giving access to every area of the resort. The twin resorts of Barèges and La Mongie offer between them100km of varied runs, 42 ski lifts and 69 pistes. Beginner to intermediate skiers have 24 green and 20 blue runs, making it possible to visit all of the five inter-connected ski areas without straying onto anything too challenging. For advanced skiers there are plenty of challenging red runs, 5 blacks and huge off-piste potential. There is a snow park for boarders!
Our Accommodation..
We stay in a small, family run hotel centrally located in the village and close to all amenities. Our ski bus stops directly outside our hotel making access to the slopes easy and hassle free. The hotel offers twins, triples and quad rooms all with private facilities and all on a half board basis.
Relax and unwind in the Thermes de Barèges..
Join the Mango group and spend an afternoon in the Thermes de Bareges after your hard days skiing. The village of Barèges was first established as a spa resort (the thermal waters were first discovered in the 15th century). Across the road from our hotel are the "The Thermes de Bareges" which have recently been completely refurbished and offer a variety of treatments and aqua facilities for adults as well a thermal swimming pool that can be used by parents and children (minimum age for entry is 3 years). Cost for entry to the thermal pool approx €16 per adult and €14 (15 -17yr old) €8 per child 3-14yrs.
Activity
Your Mango co ordinator can organise a day of snowshoeing or husky dog rides(subject to availablity) for those that fancy a day off from the slopes.......
Mango Holiday Fun..
The trip will be accompanied by a Mango co-ordinator, who will be able to help you organise your ski hire, ski pass and book ski lessons. We will head off on the ski bus together and split into groups for skiing, ski lessons and arrange to meet up for lunch and of course take part in Apres Ski at the local french "Pub" before dinner. Over dinner there will be a chance for us to exchange our days' experiences on the slopes.
